HAIR GROWTH JOURNEY
My hair growth journey has been a very LONG journey, but I’m here to say your hair will grow back!! It’s taken me almost a year and a half to get my hair back to “normal”. What caused my hair loss? Several things… Multiple surgeries under anesthesia, two rounds of intense hormones with egg freezing, a horrible breakup, and so much stress. BUT, surprisingly the real root cause is genetics. Don’t be fooled though because my family has never gone bald, but that was the first thing I learned from Dr. Yaker at Yaker Hair Restoration. Hair loss genetics can skip generations so it could be someone years and years back in your family!
My hair is my identity so when I started to lose it I felt incomplete. I didn’t know what was happening and why so after a breakdown I finally decided to get professional help from Dr. Yaker. The things I learned from my first visit were mind-blowing… Now I’m finally sharing 3 hair loss myths and 5 hair growth tips and products for healthy hair!!
3 HAIR LOSS MYTHS
DON’T WASH YOUR HAIR EVERY DAY
This was the biggest shocker and adjustment in my hair care routine. When I was asked if I wouldn’t wash my face every day my obvious response was NO. So, guess what? Your scalp is part of your face! That means if you sweat or put a product in your hair just like putting makeup on your face you need to wash it off. Believe me, it’s hard to do it every single day and I realistically only wash it about 4-5 times a week but it’s been one of the absolute biggest factors in growing my hair longer and thicker.
P.S. Your hair needs moisture more than anything.
LET YOUR HAIR AIR DRY
Actually, your hair is the most fragile when it’s wet. It’s better to dry your hair immediately after you shower using a low speed and low temperature.
HAIR VITAMINS WORK
Not really… You’re better off with a multivitamin. Almost all the hair vitamins you think of like Nutrafol don’t have enough nutrients in them to make a difference. That’s why Dr. Yaker has prescription hair drops applied directly to the scalp to help the root follicle grow. For those of you who don’t live in Texas, I have another serum I recommend below.
Dr. Yaker does do virtual hair appointments though which I’d recommend so you can get his hair growth drops.
5 HAIR GROWTH TIPS AND PRODUCTS
USE SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER WITH LOW PH
There are a lot of products on the market for hair growth, but the biggest thing you need to know about shampoo and conditioner is to use one with a low PH number. Between 4 and 5 is the absolute best. If you don’t see the PH number on the bottle or website call the customer support number for the brand to find out!
P.S. Definitely get a scalp scrubber and get in there to get all the buildup gone.
DON’T USE DRY SHAMPOO
Like I mentioned above, the reason you need to wash your hair daily is that you are clogging the pores on your scalp by using dry shampoo and other products. Think about how clogged those pores are after several dry shampoo days!! Ewwwwwww!!!!!
GET PRP TREATMENTS
Not going to lie, PRP treatments are not cheap. However, they really do help. I got 6 PRP treatments done for my scalp over 2 years. It will help expedite the hair growth process.
INVEST IN GOOD PRODUCTS
I’ve completely switched my hair products to ones I’ve researched and tested for several months so I can say they work. Vegamour is great for shampoo, conditioner, and serum. You’ll also want a good hair mask like the Briogeo “Don’t Despair, Repair” Rice Water Protein + Moisture Strengthening Treatment. Rice water is actually a GREAT thing for hair growth. My full hair care product list is below:
USE CLIPS OR SILK HAIR TIES
I didn’t realize that wearing a tight hair tie when I work out or wear my hair up can cause serious breakage. Use silk hair ties or clips if you must! Also, position your ponytail in different spots each time.
The last few things I’ll leave you with is this… Be patient. This is truly a journey and I’m still dealing with it. You can still wear hair extensions during the hair growth process if you feel more comfortable, but I’d try not to. Also, you can still get your hair colored like normal. Just make sure to do masks 1-2 times a week and be gentle with your hair as it grows.
This process is truly from the inside out starting with your hair follicle at the root. If you are diligent with these practices you should start seeing the benefits within about 4-12 months!
Thank you! This was very informative. A few questions for you:
1. How does one find a hair doctor? What research did you do.
2. How does one find PRP treatments and what does this entail exactly?
Appreciate your guidance! Have a nice day!
Thank you for sharing your hair journey, I’ve been on mine for 5 years. I’m noticing it’s thicker at the top, but as you run your hand down my hair, it get thinner. I’m going to tweak my regime to incorporate some of your tips.
